Smithy's Porridge

This is a tune from my first CD "In the Duck Shed". I wrote it way back in 1995 before I'd even heard of Celtic guitar. The result is a tune with basically no ornamentation at all, but some bizarre chords to make up for it. At the time I was listening to a lot of early Windham Hill guitarists and going for that open and free sound.

I've tried several times to convert this across to a more "friendly" tuning and failed each time. If anyone ever manages it, please let me know.

The tuning is: F A# D F C D#, capo at the 4th fret.

After two recent wedding requests for this tune (and subsequent tab requests from the lucky guitarist) I decided to try and learn it again.

So here it is, the tab to Smithy's Porridge.
You can also play the audio over there on the left, I added it to the playlist.

While we're here, there are some other matters to discuss about this tune. Unfortunately, the title does not refer to some romantic notion of Smithy roaming the moors of Scotland and coming home to a warm bowl of porridge. Actually, it refers to a dog called Smithy (great dog by the way) who once threw up on my front doorstep. Hence the name.

Also some wedding advice about performing this tune. When you've finished, and the couple are giving their vows, now is *not* the time to try and take your capo off, and unload the spring against the open strings. FA#DFCD# isn't the kind of chord you want jangling out at full volume to a wedding gathering.

Enjoy !
